Ears Wide Open: Paint

Paint is the solo project of Allah-Las guitarist/singer Pedrum Siadatian, and his first self-titled release came out Friday on Mexican Summer . Drawing influence from the likes of Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers and John Lennon, the project grew from four-track-recorded song sketches he started making after the Allah-Lahs finished their third album “Calico Review” in 2016. As it didn’t seem the songs were meant for that band, Siadatian found himself launching a new project. Keeping the homemade feel of his original recordings, Siadatian worked with producer Frank Maston to flesh things out, also recruiting drummers Matt Correia and Nick Murray to contribute on the twelve tracks that make up “Paint.”

“Moldy Man” was the first song he wrote, about “finding an escape from routine and decay through dreams.” That dream translated into a trippy garage number where the instruments and vocals seem to keep sneaking up on each other in a handmade psychedelic fun house. It’s a laid-back and comfortably fun puzzle of sounds. The video was directed by Sam Kristofski (whose credits include Connan Mockasin, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the Babe Rainbow) at the Mosaic Tile House in Venice, with animations by Bailey Elder.
