“You need to breathe some life into your crown.” So goes the chorus to Pretty’s debut single “Breath Some.” Heady advice for dark times from the young quintet, together for a mere six months, making music that harks back to a time when their parents were children.
The core of the Burbank band is comprised of three brothers, Milosh Petko, 22, Mihailo Lukic, 19, and Topli Petko, 18. Don’t let their tender ages insinuate that they are a sloppy garage band. Along with Connor Bond and Felipe Rodriguez, they make a glorious noise that does their New Wave influences justice. Steeped in dreamy guitar shimmer, one listen and you are immediately referred to an era of the Cure, the Psychedelic Furs, New Order and the like. When asked about their influences, singer Milosh Petko explained, “The ’80s being an inspiration is because that is the music that is most familiar to us. Growing up that’s pretty much the only music are parents played at home so it’s pretty ingrained in us. We try to recreate that post-punk sound with a modern twist.”
Opening with a gorgeous chorus-soaked guitar riff, “Breathe Some” carries a positive and universal message. “But this isn’t just a song about me and my brothers,” Milosh says. “I think it’s really a song for anyone who’s spent even a moment in darkness and been blessed by a hand extended in love and grace.” This youngest member of the band, Topli has even greater ambitions in mind, stating, “Our main goal is to take the audience to a special place, a sacred place, we want to transport people from feeling lost in the world to being found in a trance. We want to share our stories. We want to share our world.”
The single is officially out Nov. 16; the band is currently working on an EP, due in early 2019.
