With a voice as smooth as caramel, L.A. singer-songwriter Jasper Bones is the smooth cup of café that brightens your day or cozies up your evening. He calls his music “Chicano wavy-soul,” and he has released four singles so far that have garnered a million-plus loves on streaming services. His latest, “Someone Like You,” released yesterday via Kobalt/AWAL, is a wistful daydream about admiring someone from afar and feeling so far from adequate to approach them. Strumming 7th chords to a falsetto, Bones sets the tone with some Marvin Gaye-inspired sexual angst before singing, “You don’t seem to see me / To you, I don’t exist / I’m ready to love you / But I just can’t make your list / It’s like I’m invisible / ‘Cause I don’t got the physical / I’m not irresistible / I guess I’m just invincible / I don’t know how / I can get someone like you / To notice some nobody like me.” It’s a universal feeling when we’ve come across a sparkling being on a seemingly unapproachable social plane and we don’t have the means or the self-esteem start with hello.
