Part Time

Part Time’s new album “Spell #6” came out Nov. 2nd on Burger Records and it feels like silk pajamas on the couch, watching romantic movies from the 1980s with (or probably bereft of) someone you love. David Loca wrote this batch of songs over the last year, some alone, others with his band, and a few are revisions of old demos. It’s his sixth album to date. He describes it as “a safe/studio/clean/mellow/pop album,” but that’s a rather modest sell. Those things may be true, but “Spell #6” is peppered with gems. “I Can Treat You Better,” featuring Ariel Pink, has racked up considerable critical praise, and sensual heartbreak song “Shattered Love” makes a person want to spill a martini all over those silk pajamas because it provides just the right amount of slinky rhythm to get off the couch and dance. Not to mention the pleasure derived from its video full of greased-up men in short shorts. Kevin P. Kearney directed that video, as well as the one for “I Didn’t Know,” a song that began with drummer Marcos Smith trying to mimic Marvin Gaye’s drummer. A wistful, dreamy track, it’s for passing out after all those martinis as the room spins away.
