Chris Cohen shares his first new music since 2016’s “As If Apart,” which was his second album after his 2012 debut, “Overgrown Path.” On both those records, Cohen played every instrument, perhaps seizing the literal meaning of going ‘solo’ after being in other bands — including Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Deerhoof and Cass McCombs — for some time.
But on new song, “Edit Out,” Cohen invited a few other people into the recording process: Jay Israelson on piano and Kasey Knudsen on saxophone. A mysterious musing surrounding a certain Mikado Hotel, the soft touch of Cohen’s voice calmly paints a wispy, intriguing image. The piano and jazzy drums urge the story forward, with the saxophone coming in just right between verses to embellish “Edit Out’s” moment of noir.
