Stream: Fawns of Love, ‘December’

Jenny and Joseph Andreotti (fka Funeral Club) returned in 2017 under the moniker Fawns of Love, named in admiration for Kate Bush’s seminal album “Hounds of Love.” The Bakersfield couple’s latest, the dreamy single “December,” arrives ahead of their upcoming album, “Permanent,” out Jan. 18. It’s the third tease from their first release via Test Pattern Records after selling out a limited edition 12-inch EP of their live performance on Part Time Punks’ radio show and self-releasing the 2017 album “Who Cares About Tomorrow.”

Mixed and mastered by Josiah Mazzaschi, the album formed around themes of transition, Jenny Andreotti says. “For the past year, my life has been in a complete flux. People have moved away, relationships have changed, and this has challenged my belief that people’s love for you is permanent.” Dealing with impermanence and feelings of loss are apparent in the songs shared so far. And all have elements of bands from first and second wave punk, new wave, post-punk and goth bands that they pay homage to in addition to Bush. “December” is built upon the shoulders of the Cure and Slowdive with its swimming guitar lines and washes of hazy, bright synths. Jenny’s pillowy, echoing vocals are also reminiscent of Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser and Enya. It’s a nice blend and definitely rock, as opposed to the melting pot of This Mortal Coil that leaned toward ambient. In this incarnation, Fawns of Love have perhaps unlocked the best supergroup combination with their own return.
