Ears Wide Open: The Dumes

The Dumes

Like a fine wine, Elodie Tomlinson has blossomed into her own distinct flavor (or rather timbre) after living a few more years in L.A. The five-time pro-snowboarding champion from Toronto restarted her career as a music teacher and moved to our sunny hills and valleys as one half of the soft-pop duo Sibling. Tomlinson now leads a new five-piece band called the Dumes, working with co-producer/collaborator Schilke on their debut EP at The Lair Recording studios on the Westside.

Their first single, “More Than Physical,” begins in what sounds like a distant icy place with icicle chords climbing in ascent. After a bass cues the verse, Tomlinson reveals a deeper, more confident voice than her former self. Now with a rock-worthy alto, she navigates cold territory in the pursuit of that kind of connection that doesn’t doesn’t flame out but burns long and slow, “Heard I’ll see you on the weekend / Maybe pass by / And act like we weren’t looking / Just like last time / Still gotta hold some kind of hope / Can’t let it go, though I try and I try / More than physical, baby / More than physical feeling catching me by surprise.” It’s a good sign. Jump on the lift as we ascend to where the Dumes takes us next.
