Leah Hobbs, a familiar face on the L.A. scene due to her work in brand marketing, artist relations and video production, has been named the new talent buyer at the Satellite.
The venerable room at 1717 Silver Lake Blvd. — which beginning in the mid-1990s was a crucial incubator for Los Angeles bands — was formerly known as Spaceland because of its association with promoters Spaceland Presents. When that relationship ended in 2010, the venue began doing business as the Satellite.
A native of the Philadelphia area who graduated from Villanova, Hobbs has worked for the COLLiDE Agency in artist relations and for BalconyTV as producer/host of its video series. “I’m really looking forward to building on what my predecessors have established here over the years and solidifying the Satellite as the Cheers of Silver Lake, everyone’s friendly neighborhood music venue,” Hobbs said in a press release.
She replaces Scott Reifman, the talent buyer at the Mint who added those duties at the Satellite in 2017.
While the Satellite has a long and illustrious history as a go-to club, it has faced increased competition in recent years from newer, similar-sized venues such as Zebulon, the Hi Hat and the Moroccan Lounge, along with longer-running mainstays like the Echo and the Bootleg Theater.
My suggestion for her is to get rid of the dance nights and the comedy nights and just have live bands 7 nights a week.
