Stream: Filthy Friends, ‘Last Chance County’

Rock supergroup Filthy Friends materialized in the entrails of the 2016 political firestorm, a group of distinguished veterans getting justifiably pissed off at national affairs while too many of their younger cohorts were busy taking selfies. Their first single appeared on the “30 Days, 30 Songs” anti-Trump project, and their 2017 full-length “Invitation” kept the volleys coming.

Filthy Friends combine the talents of Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, along with Scott McCaughey (who has bounced back from the stroke he suffered in late 2017), Kurt Bloch and Linda Pitmon.

They turn their attention to the state of Earth on their second album, the verdantly titled “Emerald Valley,” arriving May via Kill Rock Stars. The album was introduced today with “Last Chance County,” a guitar-strafed invective sung from the perspective of those whom capitalism is failing. Tucker’s signature caterwauling is on point here; would that legions of others raise their voices accordingly.
