Le Butcherettes touched down at the Moroccan Lounge on Tuesday night, part of the quartet’s tour in support of their new album “bi/MENTAL,” which came out last month. It was a furious performance to a rapacious crowd, capped at the finish by a cameo from pioneering rocker/activist/author Alice Bag.
The evening started out with a blast with a raucous performance by local art-punk quartet the Tissues. Frontwoman Kristine Nevrose thrashed about the stage while the band raged on, helping to wake up the Moroccan Lounge on a Tuesday night. Next was another local act, Stars at Night. Led by the antics of vocalist Janelle Obert and backed by the thundering drums of Joana, Stars at Night cruised through a rockin’ set, receiving high praise from the packed room.
Once the lights dimmed for the last time, Le Butcherettes took the stage to a group of eager fans. Led by Teri Gender Bender (Teresa Suárez Cosío), with Alejandra Robles Luna pounding away on drums, Marfred Rodríguez-López on bass, and Riko Rodríguez-López on guitar and synths, Le Butcherettes took their performance to another level. With seemingly unending energy, Teri and her band ripped through song after song, most of which came from “bi/MENTAL,” which was released earlier this month. By the time all of the red face-paint had dripped off of Teri’s face, their fiery set came to a close. After a brief encore and a crowd that was chanting for more, Le Butcherettes took the stage for three more songs. To finish up their set, they were joined by Alice Bag for the song “mother/HOLDS.”
Setlist: Burn the Scab, spider/WAVES, father/ELOHIM, My Mallely, La Uva, Lonely & Drunk, Dress Off, struggle/STRUGGLE, nothing/BUT TROUBLE, Stab my Back, strong/ENOUGH, Mr. Tolstoi. Encore: la/SANDIA, Leibniz Language, mother/HOLDS (with Alice Bag)
