It’s not often we are called up on to write about the same song twice, but Kera Armendariz — now releasing music just under her first name KERA — is a special case. Having moved on from her project Kera & the Lesbians, the singer-songwriter (and charismatic side player in many other bands) last spring issued a handful of singles as she prepped for a larger release this year.

But first, there is “Bright Future Ahead.” KERA initially released the “Dreamers Version” of the song as a limited-time download in fall of 2017, with proceeds going to a DACA defense organization. Now, in collaboration with Devendra Banhart, she has taken the tune, with its dreamy island vibe, and stripped it back to the tenderest of meditations. It’s out today, with all of the proceeds going to Trans Lifeline, an organization that supports the trans community.

“‘Bright Future Ahead’ is the urgency to live unapologetically … A paradox between the helplessness in today’s political status quo and the need to support one another,” says the artist who once described her music as “bi-polar folk.” “This song is written with the intention of offering encouragement, community and resilience to all who listen.”

Produced by Jon Joseph, the song is available on iTunes.
