Justus Proffit’s forthcoming album “L.A.’s Got Me Down” has its share of anxiety about this place of extremes, but the city is clearly not the only thing that has him down. Proffit has unveiled the third single from the album, “Shadow of the Cross,” a melodic guitar scribble that unleashes the jagged emotions that still linger after the death of his girlfriend. “It’s weird because it’s been about 3 1/2 years,” he says. “All those feelings were strong at the time, but as things move on, it’s such a strange sensation of emptiness. It’s not as tangible as it once was and it never will be.”
“L.A.’s Got Me Down,” out March 8 via Bar/None, is the follow-up an collaborative EP he released with Jay Som. It’s unvarnished indie-rock that recalls the lo-fi, electric salvos of Nirvana, Sebadoh, Superchunk and others whose music crackled with immediacy and vulnerability. Artifice need not apply.
