After the opening track “Coffee and Weed” — which should be in heavy rotation in every coffeehouse and dispensary in and around Abbot Kinney Boulevard — the debut album from Shere Disraeli gallops off into a classic rock cloud of smoke. The native Westsider, son of Itai Disraeli (bassist for Opium Moon, recent Grammy winners for Best New Age Album), stirs the pot (so to speak) with the nifty guitar chops he’s seemingly had since being born into a musical commune.
It’s Jack Johnson for the electric scooter set, more agitated and in a hurry. Disraeli speaks to universal needs (“Where Are You Love?”), doubts (“Did I Do It for You?) and hopes (“Something”). The riffs that open the rockers “I Could Be Yours” and “Stranger’s Room” seem right out of the ’70s, not out of the bedroom of a millennial who dabbles as a permaculture designer, beekeeper and urban farmer. It’ll be interesting to see what path his music takes next.
