Premiere: The Shakes, ‘Heaven (Doesn’t Seem So Far Away)’

The Shakes are a young Orange County indie-pop quintet striking elegant notes of optimism in an increasingly discordant world. Their new single “Heaven (Doesn’t Seem So Far Away)” floats in like a sea breeze after a raging storm, with singer-songwriter Sean Perry waxing about watching sunrises and finding his inner self over strums of an acoustic guitar and a floral bed of synths.

The song is the work of Perry along with guitarist Cameron Pearson, keyboardist Syd Tagle, bassist Tanner Henderson and drummer Levi Matullis. It’s the follow-up to 2018’s “With Every Moment” EP, a collection of earnest, nostalgia-drenched ruminations on relationships, faith and identity. “Heaven” is part of a forthcoming release titled “From the Bedroom” — songs that were tracked, produced and mixed in the band’s living room.

“Heaven” offers a three-minute beacon of comfort that, the band says, “expresses the importance of being grateful for the friends and family and to not be afraid to reach out for help, even if it makes you look vulnerable.”
