Navigating work, relationships and the modern world can often feel like being cast adrift in choppy waters, and in the early stages of her songwriting career, Lexi Vega has channeled her experiences with emotional and often downcast confessionals. But her new single as Mini Trees finds her happily centered, or at least on the way there.

“Steady Me” is a sublimely buoyant indie-pop song that turns her lonely-heartedness inside out. “If it turns out it was just a game / we’ll laugh about it either way,” she sings in the song she made with producer Jon Joseph.

“Steady Me” is the title track of the debut EP from Vega, who steps away from her role as drummer for local bands All Things Blue and Nebulamigo. “As someone who tends to use songwriting as a way to process heartbreak and grief, writing ‘Steady Me’ was a step into uncharted territory for me,” Vegas explains. “The song talks about this ‘light as air’ feeling that came with finding someone I could be my true self with. When I first started writing it, I jokingly referred to it as ‘The Happy Jam’ because I hadn’t yet written anything that had positivity like this. The song isn’t necessarily lighthearted the whole way through, though … It’s littered with doubts and fears that this kind of positive relationship would be too good to last or that I’ll end up doing something to ruin it; it would be very unlike myself to not explore the negative outcomes.”

The EP will be out in May.
