Ears Wide Open: Lizzy Land

In a city built on the competitive world of entertainment and appearing beyond perfect, it’s refreshing to hear a beautiful anthem to being less than perfect.
L.A.-via New York-via-Portland synth-pop artist Lizzy Land’s new single “Messed Up” is a cool and easy bop that excels in its refusal to subscribe to the rat race. The video being set in a party situation could also give the lyrics an alternative meaning, but the visuals of a figure wandering throughout a crowd with a mirror covering its face matches the lyrics about feeling a bit removed, “First I feel so far away / And I’m just a little messed up / I’m a little out of my head / Looks like I get along fine but / Most of the time I’m just scared / I’m just a little messed up / I think that that’s okay / I’m just a little messed up.”
The singer-songwriter explains further: “The ‘Messed Up’ video plays with my personal struggle with social anxiety and the way we often worry about how we look and come off instead of listening and being present.” It’s an acknowledgement that the first step in getting to know people is dropping that mask of self-consciousness and accepting one’s imperfections before being able to truly enjoy the company of others. The glimmering single comes ahead of Land’s anticipated summer debut EP release, “Intro Music Plays.”
