On Thursday night, “Downey” was the hit of Highland Park.
L.A. quartet NO WIN celebrated the release of their debut album — named for main man Danny Nogueiras’ hometown — with an energetic show Thursday night at the Highland Park Ebell Club. The quartet decked out the 107-year-old venue like a living room, with vintage television sets, lamps, globes, skulls, houseplants and trophies. And playing in front of a giant backlit “NO WIN” sign, they performed all 10 songs on “Downey,” which came out Friday via Dangerbird Records.
Kicking off the evening was Providence, Rhode Island-based Gymshorts, a ferocious garage-punk group playing songs from their latest Burger Records release “Knock Knock.” Frontwoman Sarah Greenwell proudly proclaimed that she is “the Jeff Gordon of our generation” and she had the NASCAR guitar to prove it. Los Bolos followed. An aggressively catchy Western blues-style rock band featuring members of FIDLAR and Together Pangea, they started their set with with the intro theme from “Jackass,” and followed with covers of the Misfits, The Ramones, Johnny Cash and more.
NO WIN setlist: After Your Legs, Endless Scan, From the Back of a Rolling Rock, Shelley Duvall, Vision, Carbar, Being Teen, Waiting for a Call, Outsource, 2 Real.
