Diane Coffee — the gender-bending, genre-fluid pop project of ex-Foxygen drummer Shaun Fleming — returns with another single off the upcoming third album “Internet Arms,” out April 19 via Polyvinyl. Fleming previously shared the video for his first single “Not Ready To Go” late last month. His latest “Like a Child Does,” is “about acting out and the chaos it creates. When humans live in a state of denial about their behavior and choose to live out the same loop over and over again, at some point a breakdown is inevitable,” says Fleming. Doubling down, he adds, “The breakdown can be a powerful growing moment: You either see yourself and make a change or fall back into the loop.” Riding this wave of self-actualization, “Like A Child Does” mostly floats in a mellifluous ether of dream-pop, crystallizing into full-glam on the chorus, “I guess I’m not fine with it.” Prince vibes abound, Fleming’s sassy cadence echoes the song’s juxtaposition of carefree exuberance and the empowerment gained reflecting upon the effects of power and abuse.
