Silversun Pickups have returned with the relentlessly driving single “It Doesn’t Matter Why,” a sly commentary on celebrity that asks “Have we all gone blind?”

It’s possible, but fans of the long-running L.A. quartet — singer-guitarist Brian Aubert, bassist Nikki Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao and keyboardist Joe Lester — will be able to see and hear the band’s fifth album, “Widow’s Weeds,” when it arrives June 7.

Aubert calls the release — the follow-up to 2015’s “Better Nature” — “the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.”

Providing the sonic illumination was producer Butch Vig and mixer Billy Bush. Working with Vig, the quartet says, was a dream. “He really listens to each band member, and he puts a great value on each individual, and what they can add to the music,” Monninger says. “It was very collaborative with him. He’s such an easygoing person, and he put everybody at ease.”

Suzie Vlcek directed the video for the new single, with choreography Taylor Unwin.
