As one of their many Coachella sideshows in April, Goldenvoice brought Hop Along, Soccer Mommy and Las Robertas to the El Rey on Tuesday evening, who will all be performing on different days this weekend at the festival.
Hailing from San José, Costa Rica, Las Robertas opened the show with their psychedelic, garage rock tendencies. After stating how this was their first bigger show in Los Angeles, you could feel the band’s excitement for being there with their energetic performance.
Soccer Mommy (Sophie Allison) was up next and slowed things down a bit with her lo-fi bedroom rock that lulled the crowd into a sense of comfort. Playing both as a full band and solo, Allison performed a number of newer songs, including “Lucy” and “Night Swimming” as well as her own rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”
Finally, Hop Along took the stage and jumped right into frontwoman Frances Quinlan’s indie-emo rock. After the first few songs, Quinlan looked up, seeming to just now notice the sold-out crowd in front of them, and stated how “magnificent” the El Rey looked with their signature chandeliers hanging up above. She stated how the only other time she had been to the El Rey was to see Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers (Bridgers was later spotted in the crowd).
