If Le Tigre Brass Monkey’d out on a molly (even though saxophones are actually woodwinds), you’d pretty much land on French Vanilla’s latest single, “All the Time.” Sally Spitz (vocals), Ali Day (guitar/bass), Daniel Trautfield (bass/sax) and Greg Shilton (drums) are actually high on a pure crush in the lead single for their second album, “How Am I Not Myself?” out June 7 via Danger Collective Records.

With production credited to Sean Cook (St. Vincent), the song features Spitz singing to a bumping bass beat and two-stepping sax, her ecstasy bursting at the seams, “You’re sitting next to me, I got a rush / It’s clear to all my friends I got a crush / The way you look at me, so deep into my eyes / It’s not like other guys / I’m feeling kinda funny, you text me late at night / We are connecting always, connecting all the time / Scarin’ me, scarin’ me … All the time, all the time / You are always on my mind, on my mind.”

The video for the song, directed by Kailee McGee with clever choreography by Maritza Navarro, plays with image-making and points of reference via what begins as a music streaming device that turns into a video player with an image of Spitz singing. Her moving image carries through with different frames from the compact-sized player device, to a magnifying glass, to a camera lens, then a jumbo-sized selfie light. At some points there’s no frame and Spitz cups her own mouth as a frame in a closeup and a few shots later, the band members playfully lock arms in a circle for a life-sized/life-made frame. Playfully, they’re all wearing goggles and swimming caps in a bid for self-improvement in the first half before a swipe to the right shows them all glammed up in the end. Crushes do tend to make the smitten self-conscious, and French Vanilla delights in the butterflies.
