“Oscillator,” the aptly named debut album from L.A. trio ASHRR, arrives May 10, all full of atmospheric synths, hard-charging rhythms and gravitas. Yes, gravitas, because this is not your flower-crown synth-pop but the work of three guys who’ve lived a little.
“Made Up Your Mind,” the latest single from the record, shows the more sensitive tint of the band (singer-songwriter Steven Davis and multi-instrumentalists and producers Josh Charles and Ethan Allen). It’s on display in the powerful video directed by William Morrison (Skinny Puppy, Bif Naked) and starring Sonny Sutherland and Victoria Parker as two people mired in lives of quiet desperation. The connection they share, for better and mostly worse, is via social media.
“We all can and do broadcast our lives these days and as always for every action, there is consequence,” Morrison says. “The video, in a nutshell, is about two lost souls who funnel their desperation through social media and end up meeting each other in a moment that is very raw and real.”
It is, as Davis says, “a striking social statement.”
He adds: “‘Made Up Your Mind’ is a snapshot of the human condition. Whether in relationships, politics, or belief systems, humans tend to form opinions, decide on a course of action, or settle into a belief, whether it’s right or wrong.”
