After the Soft White Sixties moved to Los Angeles from the Bay Area three years ago, they quickly found a cadre of fans who got behind their ’70s-inspired rock ’n’ soul and earned a reputation for their almost-carnal live shows. They also discovered things about their new home base, like “The Overpass,” a notorious L.A. after-hours club they saluted in a funky song on their 2018 album “Alta California.”
It’s a party where, as frontman Octavio Genera sings, the “Let’s get weird / let’s get high” spirit prevails.
The Soft White Sixties recruited young director Ethan Roy to capture the spirit of the song on video, which is styled like an old caper flick. “The song reminded me of those nights where you are looking to belong and forget your troubles,” Roy says. “Wanting to get lost in a haze of debauchery, but once you start to sober up and look around, you see quickly what happens when you stay there. Not leaving the night doing hard time, but not escaping next morning’s hangover.”
As the band prepares for dates supporting Rival Sons Monday at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento and Tuesday at the Fillmore in San Francisco, here’s to Genera making his getaway.
