Ears Wide Open: Paper Idol

“Still So Alive” has so much bounce per ounce that every doomsayer on the planet might soon be popping happy pills and joining the party.
It’s the new single, out today, from dance-pop alchemist Paper Idol. Wait, did we say alchemist? We meant neuroscientist. Paper Idol is the work of Matan Koplin-Green — aka Matan KG — a Milwaukee native who studied neuroscience at Wesleyan University and worked in Copenhagen for a medical technology company before chucking it all to move to Los Angeles to pursue his music dreams.
He writes, records and produces all his music himself. That proved a tricky task in making the latest single, whose original title was “Sex on the Balcony,” named for a fantasy he had. “After all, sex on a balcony is the absolute last thing that would happen to a broke 23-year-old living in his sister’s garage,” the songwriter says. “I wrote, recorded and produced the entire song in the lonely town of Coolum, Australia, where I was making music before moving to L.A. I was feeling extremely isolated, living with five medical students who didn’t understand what I was doing all day, or why I would bother doing it. ‘Still So Alive’ was my catharsis, an outlet for the fear and confusion and a reminder to myself that I still existed.”
The song is the first of a series of summer releases Paper Idol has on the way via Lowly.
Paper Idol is joined live by Adam Rochelle (keyboards/synths) and Victor Singer (drums).
