Stream: Teenage Wrist, ‘Mary’

It’s been a little more than year since L.A. alt-rockers Teenage Wrist delivered their ear-shattering full-length “Chrome Neon Jesus,” an album that delivered on the promise of their 2015 EP, “Dazed.” So we were due for a refresher course in heavy and melodic, and today Teenage Wrist surprise-released their new EP, “Counting Flies.”
The EP offers three songs of spacious, immersive shoegaze, all produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Matt Hyde (Deftones, Parkway Drive). As the lead track “Mary” indicates, the band — founded by singer-bassist Kamtin Mohager, singer-guitarist Marshall Gallagher and drummer Anthony Salazar (now joined by touring guitarist Chase Berman) — is not resting on the sound that drew them acclaim for “Chrome Neon Jesus.” They integrate some angular, hardcore breakdowns into their big, swirl-of-guitars mix. Oh, “Mary,” whoever you are, you ought to hear this.
