Kevin Morby & the Oh My God band made their debut on the vast, “cloud”-covered stage of the Theatre at the Ace Hotel on Wednesday night, appearing to float above the laid-back crowd. The mix of indie, folk and rock, with just a hint of twang, entranced the crowd with a mid-week spiritual setlist consisting mostly songs from Morby’s new album “Oh My God.” Following the release of “Oh My God” earlier this year, Morby and the Oh My God band are embarking on a 42-date North American and European tour that stretches into July. Wednesday’s show was the first of the tour.

Sam Cohen & his band, who all came back on stage to perform as the Oh My God band for Morby, opened the show with a set of Cohen’s solo work, some of which was co-written with Morby. Cohen’s new album “The Future’s Still Ringing in My Ears” comes out next week via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records.
