Ska brought the members of Compress Collide together.
The new L.A trio is comprised of singer-guitarist Adam Bones, singer bassist Nate Light and drummer Brandon Dickert, who met when they were playing as backing members of Save Ferris. All come with indie-rock pedigrees — Bones in the Two Tens, Light in the Janks and Dickert in Furiosa — and as their backgrounds suggest, riffs rule the roost.
There’s a little Hüsker Dü-era punk in the trio’s first single “I Don’t Belong Here” a cry to break free of society’s shackles. “We’re spoon-fed thoughts every day / That things must be a certain way / And if you disagree you’ll pay … Yeah we can choose to disobey,” Bones and Light sing. It’s a familiar sound of rebellion, and considering what the world is throwing at us these days, a still-welcome one.
The song, officially out on Friday, is the first from a series of singles and EPs the trio has planned for 2019.
