Just when you think rock music is running in place, not really confronting anything or even saying much at all, somebody like BONES (now going by BONES UK) comes along to blow your hair back.
The duo of Rosie Bones and Carmen Vandenburg got their start in their native U.K., forgoing London for L.A. early last year and immediately doing wonders for local earplug sales. Bones can spit out verses convincingly, mocking gender politics and society’s backwards depiction of women. Vandenburg, an Academy of Contemporary Music-trained guitarist and session player who co-wrote and performed with the legendary Jeff Beck, can shred, making her axe sound like a weapon of mass destruction. Together, they forge a sound Nine Inch Nails fans would love. (Indeed, NYLON magazine appraised them as “Trent Reznor-level cool,” which sounds about right.)
Today, BONES UK announced that their self-titled debut album will be out July 12 via Sumerian Records. With the news came the video for the new single, “Pretty Waste,” an industrial missile that gets to the heart of what the duo stands for. “It’s about this idea that if you’re a girl, you can’t be both attractive and smart,” Bones says. “We wanted to show that you can be feminine and strong and tough and angry all at the same time: You can be whatever you want to be.”
In this case: Be loud, very loud.
