L.A. via Utah brothers Jantzen, Chase and Weston Meier of Goldensuns have allowed ample time for their blissful debut EP “Give It Up” to marinate in collective consciousness since 2016, touring with Warpaint and opening for Saint Motel, Lydia, The Radio Dept., Maps & Atlases, Launder, fellow Utah brothers from another mother (and father) Sego, Arms Akimbo, SWIMM and this year’s third annual Love You Down fest. Racking up streams, good reviews and syncs throughout this time, the brothers Meier are ready to begin raising the anchor on their upcoming sophomore EP, “Denandra,” releasing today their new single, “Shook.”
The video is a catch-up of all that they’ve been up to these last few years since “Give It Up,” with snippets of long roadtrips while touring, shows at recognizable local venues (we spy the Echo and the Hi Hat) and a couple larger ones, rehearsing, and chilling around the city in between, all sewn together like the sonically warm, cozy quilt of the softly-sung “Shook.” With two-part vocal harmonies intertwined with a grooving bass line alternating with glowing arpeggiated guitar chords, the song starts in humble beauty as the brothers sing about keeping one’s head down in one’s own business while considering plans to settle down. They’re all about the walk and not the talk. Two-thirds through, the song blooms with the brothers imploring more urgently “All I really want to do is to figure out what it is you’re doing / It’s time for me to try just like it’s do or die but I’ve been waiting too long to find it.” It’s an earnest embodiment of the oft-quoted translation of Goethe’s “Faust”— “What you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” In other words, it’s never too late to start.
