Premiere: Opus Vitae, ‘Get Lost’

“Get Lost,” the new single from Opus Vitae, starts like a waking dream, with singer-songwriter Banah Winn musing, in the upper register and with palpable emotion, about being Anyplace But Here. It’s a relatable feeling — the notion that a change in geography would yield a change in fortunes, or at least attitude. And by the end of of “Get Lost,” it sounds as if it’s working, as the slow-building pop song explodes into guitar-tastic indie-rocker.

The song is part of the narrative on Opus Vitae’s forthcoming album “Gramercy,” an autobiographical portrait of a year in Winn’s life in which the Portland, Ore., native sought to shake the chains of depression and come out the other side with a renewed sense of purpose. “Gramercy,” which follows Opus Vitae’s 2015 debut EP, finds Winn recording solo, playing all the instruments and self-producing.

“Get Lost” was inspired by Winn’s girlfriend at the time. “It was one of the first and only times in my life that someone made me feel loved in a way that was uplifting, that made me believe in myself, that made me feel truly strong,” he says. “It’s about wanting to run off and just explore the world and fall in love. After coming from such a heavy place it was such welcome shift and moment in my life, even if it was only that.

“I wanted to make the song itself a journey, reflective of the one I just took. The soft start, the proclamation, the awkward misstep, the recovery, the good times, the affirmation and finishing with a take-off. … I felt like ending on a instrumental chorus was in a way more interesting, unexpected and powerful because some things are better said without words.”
