The best tunes always come out of the blue, and it was out of that impulse that Matt Costa came up with his latest single. Out now via Dangerbird, “‘Make That Change’ was written and recorded very quickly,” Costa says. “As when change comes, it is likely to catch us off guard. The writing of this song caught me at a vulnerable point, and I was fortunate enough to work with producer Alex Newport to help make it direct as possible.”

It is another of the windswept, bittersweet campfire songs Costa is so adept at creating. The single, a follow-up to 2018’s critically lauded album of Cali story songs, “Santa Rosa Fangs,” is the first salvo of additional music that he’s promised to release before year’s end. Costa spent much of last year touring behind “Santa Rosa Fangs,” a dark and vaguely semi-autobiographical tale so intriguing he ended up recording an accompanying narrative version to the album that listens like an audiobook.

It’s been well over a decade since the ex-pro skateboarder was discovered and began collaborating and touring with Jack Johnson. Five albums and seven EPs into his career, Costa has since matured like a fine spirit. Presently, he’s on the road with Americana lads JD & the Straight Shot and fellow singer-songwriter Matt Hartke, on a tour presented by SiriusXM’s Coffee House channel, lovingly dedicated to the art of the singer-songwriter.
