L.A. quartet ZOOLUXX made feral funk-rock (which they call “hoodoo boogaloo”) that could make a light post dance. So they are the perfect fellows to make a caper film.

The video for the new single “How Far,” out today, stars local legend Vj Kesh (who appeared in Harley Cortez’s latest video, among others) as a fugitive in possession of a secret ZOOLUXX tape. Frontman Troy Vincent and bassist Ned Casual give chase as Kesh scurries through downtown L.A. so he can give the music to a DJ. Will Kesh’s mission succeed? Will, as the band says, the music “subsequently liberate citizens from the tight grips of oppression?”

The video, directed by the band and Mike Manzoori (whose credits include Dinosaur Jr., the Pixies and Etnies Skateboarding), serves as a metaphor, too, beyond fighting for your right to party (to the right music). “The video is a reflection of the vicious cycle we endure as artists, and humans in general, and the great lengths we must go to express ourselves and affect positive change in the face of this harsh and cruel world,” ZOOLUXX says.

So there’s that.

The single was produced by Karl Denson (Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Lenny Kravitz, Greyboy All-Stars, The Rolling Stones) and features horns by Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma. It’s a precursor to a new EP, “Ghetto Starship,” the band will be releasing next week.
