Jesika von Rabbit, aka Queen of the High Desert, is well known for fronting the psychedelic freakout four-piece that bears her name, Gram Rabbit. What is relatively unknown is the fact that she’s a country crooner of considerable depth. She displays that talent in a duet with Jason Nutter on their new video for the song “Joshua Tree.” The torch-and-twang single is something that would not have been out of place in David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” with the similar ghostly mirages (directed by Jessica Janos) leading the particulars to a bloody demise.
It was originally Nutter’s solo tune. Nutter, a long time musician from the Inland Empire who founded Music Heals Inc. (a Palm Springs non-profit that provides musical instruments and programs to disabled children regardless of their ability), explained how he got Ms. von Rabbit to contribute, “Earlier this year Jesika had performed a show for the foundation and had the [special needs] kids open up for her, and I thought she was amazing. So I wrote the song and we’re recording it and the producer David Williams said I should get Jesika Von Rabbit to sing on it. I said she’d never do it, but I called her anyhow and she listened to it and loved it so we finished writing it and recording it together.”
