Premiere: Pop Levi, ‘She Was a Girl’ (feat. Ariel Pink)

Just think of Pop Levi as an international man of mystery. The British singer-songwriter and producer has released three albums, the most recent in 2012 and the first, “The Return to Form Black Magick Party,” a stone-cold glam/psych-pop gem. He has recorded on a secret Greek island and in a barn in Norway. He played Coachella in 2007 (and for our money was one of the best-dressed guitar-slingers ever to do so).

He was a member of Ninja Tune’s Super Numeri. He played in Ladytron. He partnered with Canadian model-singer Bunny Holiday on the experimental noise-pop project Crush DLX, which released a song a day for 370 days as part of their “Micro Sex Tapes” series. He co-wrote on a song on Childish Gambino’s album “Because the Internet.” He directed Arabian Prince’s “Let’s Hit The Beach” video. He was the subject of a comic strip. And he’s had his visual art — it’s “Pop Art,” naturally — exhibited in galleries. His recent social media posts depict Levi doing all manner of vacation-y things throughout Europe, so we’re jealous.

Levi links up with L.A. auteur Ariel Pink (who had collaborated with Crush DLX back in 2014) in his Highland Park studio for the new single “She’s a Girl,” a libidinous romp on “a cherry slip ’n’ slide.” Levi’s glammy vocals spill the thrill; the guitars are ripped with energy.

If you’re curious about the backstory, Levi says: “‘She Was A Girl’ is about an explosive night with a temptress with cola-flavored eyes who has an extensive collection of her lovers’ souls in her desert town home.”
