Ears Wide Open: Spooky Mansion

Spooky Mansion is the recently transplanted quintet of Grayson Converse, Rob Mills, Marty Reising, Charlie McCone and Braden Lyle, who have moved down the coast from the Bay Area to spread the gospel of their (often deceivingly) breezy surf-meets-garage-rock.

In 2018, the band made a mark with “Alright,” their first full-length, which drew inspiration from ’60s guitar bands, the band’s background in jazz studies and Converse’s world travels.

Are they nice guys? Not if you believe “Real Jerk,” the riffy first single from the forthcoming EP “That’s Me!” (out Oct. 29). It’s a guitar-spiked apology.

“I remember the 100-degree day in Cambodia when I sat at my kitchen table, struggling to keep my cheap nylon guitar in tune and picking out the melody for ‘Real Jerk.’” Converse says. “Out my fourth-story window the jungle canopy extended as far as I could see. It was a great time to reflect and think about mistakes I’d made on the other side of the world, to come to terms with them, and to move on.”
