Danish electronic artist Trentemøller will release “Obverse,” his fifth album and first in three years, on Sept. 27. On the new single, Jennylee (aka Jenny Lee Lindberg of Warpaint) joins the long roster of singers who have collaborated with the composer, born Anders Trentemøller.
The restless, propulsive dream-pop of “Try a Little” follows the release of the singles of “In The Garden” (which features New York artist Lina Tullgren) and the instrumental soundscape “Sleeper.”
Trentemøller says “Obverse” originally was conceived as an instrumental album. But besides Jennylee and Tullgren, the list contributors came to include Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell and Copenhagen artist Lisbet Fritze as well.
“I have always worked with contrasts in my music and in my sound,” Trentemøller says of his sonic explorations on the new album. “It’s in the subtle clashes of feelings and tonal contradictions that I often find pure inspiration. Obverse was always going to be about exploring the possibilities in my studio, with no consideration of how it could be performed on a stage, and it was completely liberating.”
The video for “Try a Little” is the work of experimental filmmaker and Emmy-nominated animator Thomas McMahan.
