When singer-songwriter Andrea Silva first debuted her work as Loyal Lobos in 2017, she was freshly relocated to Los Angeles from her native Colombia. Still a teenager, couch-surfing and working through some heartbreak, she found comfort in reconciling her past life with her new one via songs. And last year, she released her first EP, “The Fall.”
Silva found a musical kindred spirit in singer-songwriter Evan Voytas, who once played in the live band of songwriter (and now producer) Teddy Geiger. After the duo began recording new Loyal Lobos songs in Geiger’s studio, Geiger stepped in to be executive producer for the material.
The affecting new single “Criminals,” out today, is the first from those sessions. The song floats at the intersection of folk and dream-pop, its emotional weight carried by Silva’s serenely sweet vocals. She calls the track “a love song to a friend. A platonic friendship with many undertones. It’s about danger, fun, love, sadness, and sisterhood. The complexities of a woman and a friendship between two. It is my song to Sam.”
