In support of their debut album “Pictures of Pictures,” sibling duo Cones took the stage at the Bootleg Theater on Saturday night. As Jonathan Rosen told Buzzbands.LA, “I hope listening to the album will bubble up a beautiful long lost memory for the listener.”
One can’t argue with that, as their layered pop sounds just send the synapses bouncing. Their pure vocals also resulted in hugs and sensual heat during the night. Brothers Michael and Jonathan shared a long hug before starting their set and more than a few in the audience were hugging their lovers. A friend in the audience shouted out to the band, “So hot.” Jonathan responded, “So hot? Is that what he said?” The retort, “You heard what I said.”
A handful of their fans showed their support by bringing orange street traffic cones. Incense burned throughout the set. All this aroma, love and support came to a sudden end towards the end of the set when their bassist had his drop the mic moment when his bass slipped from his hands and sent the sound system into ear piercing meltdown. The crowd and the band got a good laugh from the moment.
Jess Cornelius and Total Heat opened the night. For Jess, as her music beats got stronger, her foot kicks got higher. She mentioned at the start of the set, “I stomped my foot so hard, my shoe unbuckled.” She also had the comment of the night, “Don’t you hate it when you’re wearing pantyhose and your gusset starts dropping down to your knees?” Total Heat started their set off in a meditative chant before heading off into their futuristic jazz invention. Lead Ross Wallace Chait took turns between drums and guitar during the set. How often will you hear a musician talk about both Henry David Thoreau and Shakespeare in the middle of the set?
Cones setlist: Eyes of Propane, Whatever You’re Into, Later, Seeing Triple, Moonstone, Nicemare, Inner Voice, Laugh Of The Party, Back in the Brain, Echoes On
