The thoroughly bewitching “Won’t Know Yet” is the first new single from experimental pop artist Nahneen Kula since her 2016 full-length album, “Put It With Mine.”
It’s the work of Garden Grove native Charlene Gibbs, who derived her nom de tune from a childhood nickname (Nahneen) and her Malaysian mother’s maiden name (Kula), and her collaborator Sammy Rothman, who joined her in writing, producing and mixing the song.
The music video, which co-stars the artist’s cousin, Vanessa Gabu, is equally captivating. It was filmed when she and Rothman were visiting her family in Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. During the visit, they attended a traditional kampung wedding, she says, “which is why I’m wearing my Dusun baju in the video.”
The trek into the Malaysian rainforests was not without adventures — there was a looming thunderstorm, not to mention Mother Nature herself. “We got so many mosquito bites while filming this,” she says.
