The sister trio that is Joseph brought their harmony vocals to the Fonda Theater in support of their new album, “Good Luck, Kid.” They sang all except for one song off the album during their 18-tune set. On Natalie Schepman’s setlist were the penciled words “MEAN IT,” which also provided a concise take of the night. Natalie provided the high energy. Her guitar swung high and low while she used the Fonda’s stage to her advantage. Allison Closner came with love as her arms were often spread wide, showing fans the openness of the band. Meegan Closner connected it all together with vocals that tied the melodies to the music. The trio played with a backing band for much of the set, but for three songs they sent them off to the side. That resulted in the trio hitting the power vocals. During the first of those songs, “Without You,” as the vocals went higher and higher, the crowd’s cheers grew in proportion.
Opening the night was Run River North, who joined Joseph on a four-leg portion of their tour. The band has an EP dropping Nov. 1st called “Monsters Calling Home, Vol. 2.”– for those who know the band’s story, this is the band’s original name – excluding the Vol. 2 part. The crowd’s energy erupted as the curtains went up and continued as the band started off their set with their recent song “Wake Up.” Perhaps being overly modest, the band spent parts of their set introducing themselves to the crowd, mentioning that they’re from Los Angeles and formed as a group 8 years ago. Alex Hwang, lead vocals, did provide the crowd with more recent updates about the band that also highlighted the ups and downs of life. “A couple years back, I got married. Then my mom got cancer. At the same time, we got invited to play a big festival in Asia that was headlined by Radiohead. Trump became president. We can’t be angry all the time. It is exhausting having angst. Sometimes we need to try and dance.” After their set, as well as Joseph’s set, a long line of fans queued up to buy merchandise, which kind of proved that the modesty wasn’t needed. Maybe some fans walked away with the band’s own roasted coffee brand that they sell, because they’re hipsters.
Joseph setlist: In My Head, Canyon, Green Eyes, Half Truths, Lifted Away, SOS, Presence, Side Effects, Revolving Door, Blood and Tears, NYE, Shivers, White Flag, Without You, I Don’t Mind, Room For You. Encores: Fighter, Good Luck Kid
