Ears Wide Open: Adrianna Krikl

Adrianna Krikl

Composer Adrianna Krikl makes ambient music for films that haven’t been made yet — think widescreen documentaries shot in unspoiled nature, or footage from space exuding the vastness of the universe.

Indeed, her music, which blends analog synths, digital software, samples and loops, has scored a variety of projects, but what’s remarkable is that she is self-taught. She got her start by experimenting with an array of rudimentary gear purchased at Radio Shack, giving her work a weirdly organic feel, right down to the tape hiss.

This year, she has issued the companion releases “Celestial” and “Endless,” both three-song affairs that were mixed with additional production by Dan Konopka of OK Go. They blend the organic and digital to great effect: U.K.-based opera singer Caroline Joy Clarke lends her soaring vocals on the title track to “Celestial,” and Portugal-based experimental artist IamLawn sings on “Endless.” Serbian cellist Nina Uzelac appears on “Moon” and “Unease,” and U.K. violinist Jess Diggins plays on “Fathom.”

Recommended listening, especially wearing headphones and, to stimulate your inner filmmaker, a blindfold.
