Nicole Kiki Jaffe debuted earlier this year with “Stay,” a song that questioned one’s capacity to love after suffering seemingly irreparable damage to the heart. The L.A. singer-songwriter’s new single “Holdout,” out today, further explores breakups, and the entrails of emotions that follow.

It’s a sturdy mid-tempo rocker that, like her first single, displays her fluttering, wounded vocals and is reminiscent of the Cranberries.

“‘Holdout’ is a song about longing and getting lost in the rose-colored idea of someone,” Jaffe says. “I wrote it after going through a very abrupt breakup. The idea came to me when a friend asked if I was ‘holding out hope’ that we might get back together. In some ways, I was. But ultimately, the song is about realizing that unrequited love doesn’t serve you and you have to let go of that feeling, however intoxicating it may be. You have to go your own way, move on, and find the power and solace in that.”
