Two of Texas’ finest, genre-bending trio Khruangbin and soul man Leon Bridges, have teamed up for an EP, “Texas Sun,” arriving Feb. 7.
The seeds of the collaboration were sown last year, when the artists toured together after they released their sophomore albums. Though not an obvious pairing musically, they shared a certain vibe, and when Khruangbin authored a track that might be suitable for Bridges’ vocals, they sent it to him. He returned it the next day. The ensuing sessions with engineer Steve Christensen blossomed into four songs.
It sounds natural on “Texas Sun’s” title track. “Big sky country, that’s what they call Texas,” Khruangbin bassist Laura Lee says.
“We try not to have too much of an intention, because it gets in the way of what the music wants to do. If you just let the music do what it’s supposed to do, it will reveal itself. We tried to take that same approach with Leon. For us, it was opening up our world to have another person in it. But all of it feels like Texas to me.”
