Seven years since his last “proper” album and five years since last releasing music, Alex Brown Church — aka Sea Wolf — has resurfaced with the new single “Fear of Failure.”
Here, in typically evocative and sweeping fashion, Sea Wolf offers a rallying cry to summon bravery in the face paralyzing fear. “For me, this song is both incredibly personal and very much about the world we live in,” Church says. “It took a long time for me to get to a place where this song could come out, so it feels really good to finally be sharing it.”
Finally, indeed. It was in September 2018 that Sea Wolf announced that a new album was finished. This summer, Church and his band performed shows highlighting material from 2014’s “Song Spells, No. 1: Cedarsmoke,” a collection of stripped-down recordings that despite the lack of production flourishes showcased Sea Wolf’s deftly orchestrated folk music. It was a continuation of the narrative he began with his first EP (highlighted by the single “You’re a Wolf”) back in 2007 and continued on three full-lengths released in 2007, 2009 and 2012 by L.A.’s Dangerbird Records.
Today’s announcement of the new single, which is officially out on Friday, references the songwriter “experiencing several significant life changes,” and whatever those hurdles were, Sea Wolf fans hope they have been safely cleared.
There has been no announcement yet of a new album; maybe that can be a New Year’s resolution.
