First things first: DAISY are a noise-rock trio that formed in 2014 and released their first EP in 2015. They are not to be confused with the L.A. feel-gooders DAISY, who are fronted by a person named Daisy … not that anybody would, after hearing the music.
Anyway, the noisy DAISY are changing their name to DEYSSI, a blessing for those who google band names or search them on Spotify and click “see all.” DEYSSI was launched by Maxwell Terlecki, who’s been the bassist in Bleached and TT (the solo project of Warpaint’s Theresa Wayman), and drummer Griffin Kisner. Later, guitarist Andy Cavanaugh joined the fray. So much for the introductions.
DEYSSI make music that hurts so good, like a slap in the face followed by a warm caress on the cheek. Their loud/soft dynamic was common in the experimental rock in the ’90s and eventually matriculated to alt-rock, hardcore and grunge, and there’s a lot of conceptual subtext in the songs on “Reality Club,” the full-length DEYSSI is prepping for release. Their music probably fits with contemporaries such as METZ, Protomartyr and others carrying the DNA of bands like Drive Like Jehu and Fugazi.
“Patience: Business Woman” is the trio’s first release as DEYSSI, a glowering five-minute rocker with Terlecki’s pained vocals turning angry as he realizes he’s in a one-way relationship. The song, Terlecki says is about “giving someone your time that doesn’t respect you … [the old Japanese proverb] ‘gold coins to a cat.’”
The video, directed by Terlecki and Cavanaugh and filmed by Kyle Deven, is “more of a documented performance art piece,” Terlecki says. Rife with symbolism, it stars Terlecki and Lyndsie Earle. “The concept of the video was to create a game, where each person had an objective or end they needed to meet,” he says. “There are representative objects within the game, that each person needed to use — to then carry out another action. This was an attempt to make a video capturing real things happening without any ‘acting.’”
