“Rock ’n’ roll is a church for weirdos and degenerates, the brilliant and the forgotten,” says James Alex, singer-guitarist for Philadelphia quartet Beach Slang. “It’s the only place a whole lot of us have. And we’re here for it.”
So in going to church for their fourth full-length, Alex (the principal songwriter and lone founding member still slinging slang) enlisted the help of an elder: The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson plays bass on the whole album, titled “The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City.” It comes out Friday via Bridge Nine Records.
There’s a lot of crash, boom and crunch to go along with the bang on the album, which was mixed by none other than Brad Wood. It’s a cocktail of old-school sleaze and disdain in world of designer drinks. Which is to say, tasty.
The band, whose touring lineup currently features Alex, guitarist Aurore Ounjian, bassist Scott Schoenbeck and drummer Gee Lima, has announced a national tour that includes Southern California dates in March.
