The Getty Center’s springtime monthly concert series “Sounds of L.A.” returns this year with 3MA, Ruby Ibarra and Hamilton de Holanda beginning on Jan. 18.
3MA is the pan-African string trio of Ballaké Sissoko, Driss El Maloumi and Rajery from Mali, Morocco and Madagascar. They’ll be sharing their original compositions on the kora, oud and valiha.
Ruby Ibarra is a Bay Area producer, rapper and spoken word artist on the L.A. label Beatrock Music. Accompanied by traditional and contemporary musicians, Ibarra’s music shares the experience of being an immigrant from the Philippines and struggling in the working class, sharing poetry and prose in Tagalog, Waray and English.
Hamilton de Holanda is one of Brazil’s foremost bandolim (mandolin) musicians. Performing professionally since age 5, Holanda has innovated not only bandolim music but the instrument itself, adding two additional strings (low Cs).
Presented in collaboration with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, admission to the concert series is free. Parking at the Getty Center is $15 ($10 after 3 p.m.). For more information and to rsvp (required) visit: “Sounds of L.A.”
