Last year, Amanda Walker decamped from her native Southern California to New Orleans, where she has received a warm welcome. There, she finished work on “Will You Wish for Others,” her debut album under the guise of Glen Parks. And one should not confuse the two.
“[Glen Parks] lets me wear mesh shirts with my tits out and fringe down to my ankles in heels with studs, while most of my day clothes are flannels, pants and flat docs,” the artist told Wussy magazine last week. “Amanda and Glen have separate closets.
“Over the past two years, sometimes I feel more like Glen than Amanda,” she adds. “I actually go by Glen Parks when I introduce myself a lot these days.”
The Encinitas native and CalArts grad joined Dan Crane as one-half of Rey & Remora on the lamentably overlooked 2016 album “Startle It Up” before collaborating with DJ/producer LMNOP and applying her sweet, airy vocals to the electronic indie-pop of Glen Parks starting in 2018.
The debut single “Show” earned Parks a tour with the drag punk band Pussy Tuesday and helped her become a favorite of the L.A. drag scene, performing with members of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the Boulet Brothers’ Dragula and Exposure.
Parks’ sky-blue vocals soar above the mix of twinkling, pulsing and shimmering synths on “Will You Wish for Others,” which features some tunes that go back as far as 10 years. LMNOP co-produced, Alex Lipsen mixed and Laura Jean Anderson contributed guitars.
As the video for the lead track “Dogs” suggests, the music can be as playful as it is warm and intimate. One thing for sure, they sure know how to throw a backyard party in New Orleans.
“Will You Wish for Others” is out this week.
