Stream: The Garden, ‘Clench to Stay Awake’

Iconoclastic brother duo the Garden have reached into their sonic toolshed of sharp, rusty objects on the new song “Clench to Stay Awake.”
It’s an abrasion waiting to happen — as well as the lead track on twins Wyatt and Fletcher Shears’ fourth album, “Kiss My Super Bowl Ring,” coming out March 13 via Epitaph Records. The song, which the duo says is based on their mysterious health issues over the years, sandwiches a solid minute of punk fury in between a deadpan one-minute intro and equally impassive one-minute outro. One can only imagine how The Garden’s legendary mosh pits will explode in the middle of this one.
The album features guest appearances from Ariel Pink, Khalif Jones (aka Le1f) and a snippet from Carrot Top. And since the Garden’s first three records were so deliriously, delightfully unpredictable, that’s all that can be said for certain right now. Except to say that the album announcement touts its “unmatched belligerence.” Would have expected nothing less.
