Stream: Dear Boy, ‘The Nominee’

L.A. quartet Dear Boy might be well on their way to setting a record for longest-running rock band never to have released a full-length album. In fact, those who fell for their Britpop-inspired anthems in their infancy some seven years ago might even propose a “greatest hits” compilation even before that seemingly elusive debut.

Three EPs (2013, ’16 and ’19) and a host of singles later, Dear Boy’s penchant for crafting swooning, radio-ready rockers remains undiminished. Today, the quartet — singer-guitarist Ben Grey, guitarist Austin Hayman, drummer Keith Cooper and bassist Lucy Lawrence — released their latest single “The Nominee.” A bouquet of lush guitar pop (mixed by Tony Hoffer) led by Grey’s boy-next-door croon, it has nothing to do with the presidential election (thankfully) and everything to do with being present in the moment.

“‘The Nominee’ is a song about rejecting or accepting fate,” Grey says. “That feeling of finally figuring out what your purpose in life is and then having to decide whether you want it or not.”

The follow-up to last year’s “The Strawberry EP,” it’s fated to be on a playlist (and probably Dear Boy’s next EP) near you.
